DC5 Remembers Local 188 Member, Bill Carlow

May 2, 1959 – Sept. 12, 2021

William (Bill) Irwin Carlow was born May 2, 1959, in Anchorage, Alaska to Irwin and Rosemary Carlow and passed away in Renton, Washington on September 12, 2021. Bill is survived by one older sister, Diane (Carlow), his two children Breanna Carlow and Barrett Carlow, former spouse Barbara Carlow of 36 years, numerous nieces, grand nieces and nephews and many friends.

Bill attended West High School, class of 1977, leading his high school baseball team to back-to-back regional championship games his junior and senior seasons. He went on to attend Everett Community College and Central Washington University to study and play baseball where he was named Most Inspirational his junior and senior years. He was also a member of the Everett Merchants semi-pro baseball team. Baseball defined Bill and he played with an abundance of love, joy and passion for the game, being rewarded not by the W’s but by the numerous lifelong friendships he made along the way. He was a great teammate.

After college, Bill returned to Anchorage and apprenticed as a commercial glass glazier belonging to the IUPAT Local 1959. Barb and Bill married in 1983 in Seattle and relocated permanently to Washington State in 1987 where Bill joined Local 188 and became a member of the Glaziers and Glassworkers Union. Bill took pride in working on many buildings in downtown Seattle, often sharing stories about some of the trials and tribulations of setting glass in high-rise buildings. He enjoyed working with the new apprentices as well as the numerous Journeymen Glaziers and Iron Workers every day.  He was a skilled tradesman and enjoyed his trade. Bill continued playing baseball into his golden years as a member of the Puget Sound Men’s Senior Baseball League, winning his last championship ring in Phoenix, Arizona in 2017. Bill had a passion for auto racing, running, bike riding, and coaching his kids in baseball and basketball.
